Hello! I was wondering if you could give more specifics on eating inexpensively in London. The pubs aren’t too expensive, but I sort of get tired of pub food. Many thanks!

Really in London it’s all about how you want to spend your money. If you want to spend it on food, there are some truly excellent options out there. If you want to spend it on other things (like West End theatre!), there are ways to eat cheap.

On my first trip, I got all my recommendations from Rick Steves’ London travel guide, which I can’t recommend highly enough. It is a fabulous resource for any traveler to London, but especially for first-timers.

The portions they give you at restaurants are often really, really big, so one of the ways to cut expenses is to share meals. My sister and I kept expenses pretty low on my first trip by doing that.

On my second trip, I honestly just didn’t eat a whole lot due to lack of appetite. Breakfast was included at the place I stayed, and I generally grabbed just a snack (treacle tarts! mince tarts! YUM!) and maybe a sandwich from Pret. There is also a place called Pie, I think, in Covent Garden. They have a goat cheese & sweet potato pie that is delicious; I had that a couple of times on days I was actually hungry.

You can also pop into grocery stores and pick up ready-made sandwiches there, or even the materials to make your own meals if you want.

Whatever you do, enjoy the experience and have fun! London is a fantastic city!
